Employers prefer employees with a diploma over a GED

When it comes to hiring employees, employers have a lot of factors to consider. Education is one of the most important, as it can be a good indicator of an employee's qualifications and potential. But what if an employee has a GED instead of a high school diploma? Will employers still choose to keep that employee over someone with a high school diploma? The answer is not as clear-cut as one might think.

First, let's define what a GED is. A GED, or General Education Development, is a test that measures the knowledge and skills of an individual who has not completed high school. Passing the GED test is considered equivalent to having a high school diploma. So, in terms of education, a GED is just as valid as a high school diploma.

However, employers often consider more than just education when making hiring decisions. They also take into account an employee's work ethic, attitude, and job-specific skills. And when it comes to these factors, employees with high school diplomas have an edge over those with GEDs.

One of the main reasons employers choose to keep an employee with a high school diploma over one with a GED is that high school graduates may have a better understanding of workplace expectations. They have gone through the traditional high school experience, which includes classes, homework, and exams. This experience may have prepared them better for the demands of the workplace.

Additionally, high school graduates may have developed certain skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, that are necessary for many jobs. These skills may be more developed in high school graduates than in those who have only completed the GED test.

Another reason employers may prefer high school graduates is that they may have a stronger work ethic. High school graduates may have learned the value of hard work and perseverance during their years in school, which can be beneficial in the workplace.

Of course, it's not to say that employees with GEDs are not good employees. They may have many of the same skills and work ethic as high school graduates. But, employers may prefer to keep an employee with a high school diploma over one with a GED, due to the factors mentioned above.
